Liverpool crashed to a 3rd straight league defeat in the on Saturday, losing 1-0 to Portsmouth. To add insult to injury, the only goal of the match was scored by a certain Patrik Berger, who this time last year was wearing the famous red of Liverpool.
Liverpool were quite simply terrible in the first-half. Passes were miss-hit, possession was squandered, players were caught offside time and time again and the defending was shambolic. That may sound harsh but you really had to be here to believe that this was pretty much the same team that ripped Olimpija apart in midweek. Teddy Sheringham may be 36 but he was by far and away the best player on the pitch during the opening 45 minutes. His passing would have been a joy to watch if you supported anyone but Liverpool and it was no surprise to see him involved in every move - and there were many - that caused Liverpool problems. Sheringham wasn't alone though. Steve Stone, Nigerian striker Yakubu 'Globacom' Aiyegbeni and Patrik Berger - as is always the way with former players - all gave the Liverpool defence hell. If the Czech midfielder had performed anything like this on a regular basis in his final two years at Anfield, he might have done enough to earn himself a new contract. As it was he didn't but today the former Kop favourite took just three minutes to find the net. A terrible bit of marking in the box allowed Berger to slide the ball beyond Jerzy Dudek and give the home side an early lead.
Houllier has so many excuses this time that it just makes me sick, from bemoaning the team's finishing, blaming the current long list of injured players in the squad and even saying that the players were tired. Come on sir !! Please leave while you still can and save Liverpool fans some grief. Even though Michael Owen, Didi Hamann, Danny Murphy, Jamie Carragher, Milan Baros, Bruno Cheyrou and Salif Diao are all out injured, Liverpool should still have a squad strong enough to beat Portsmouth !! With all these excuses, he certainly has an idea that his time is up.
This was a bad league start for new captain Stevie Gerrard, who has come out and said that Liverpool simply weren't good enough. Sami Hyypia is showing a professional side to his character, backing the new reds captain; showing there are no hard feelings between them.
GH this morning is refusing to rule out winning the title. Please sack him. Now.
